SENIOR CLINICAL VETERINARIAN – AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE HOSPITAL

Wildlife Warriors invites applications from interested veterinarians for the position of Senior Clinician at the Australian Wildlife Hospital, Beerwah. Our hospital provides veterinary services to the animal collection at Australia Zoo as well as approximately 5000 wild animals each year. The hospital is well equipped and offers a very high standard of veterinary care to its patients. Opening hours are between 8am and 6pm and a 24-hour emergency service is offered for sick and injured wildlife. Our hospital is a unique and special place to work with a strong focus on conservation and the belief that the life of every one of our patients has inherent value.

The position

The position of Senior Clinician will be offered to an experienced veterinarian with a demonstrated passion for wildlife medicine and conservation. Excellent surgical (including orthopaedic) and medical skills are essential for the position, as are experience in anaesthesia and medicine of a wide variety of zoo and wild animals. A high level of competence and responsibility is required for management of the veterinary aspects of the animal collection at Australia Zoo. In addition to usual veterinary duties, the Senior Clinician will be responsible for maintaining the high standard of veterinary care, animal welfare and compassion for which this hospital is known. Weekend and after hours work will be required.

Attributes

The successful applicant will have a demonstrated history of dedication to wildlife medicine, conservation and welfare, and a minimum of 5 years in clinical veterinary practice. Prior research experience with publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals will be beneficial.

Applicants must have a degree in veterinary science and register to practice as a veterinarian in Queensland if successful in their application.

The successful applicant must also:

    1. Have, or acquire a current licence to use radiation sources (diagnostic veterinary radiography) from Queensland Health.
    2. Have, or acquire at least A, B and H category firearms licences endorsed for animal control/occupational use from the Queensland Police Service Weapons Licensing Branch.
    3. Be vaccinated for lyssavirus (rabies) and maintain protective titres.
    4. Maintain competency in the use of the darting equipment and other firearms.
    5. Demonstrate ability to competently and safely handle venomous snakes and other venomous or dangerous wildlife.
    6. Be compassionate and conservation-minded.
    7. Have the ability to work unsupervised.
    8. Have excellent customer service skills.
    9. Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
    10. Demonstrate the desire to “go the extra mile”.
    11. Be able to work in a very passionate and busy team environment.
    12. Have the ability to plan and prioritize daily duties.
    13. Have enthusiasm and a sense of humor.

Remuneration

A base salary of $80K + will be negotiable based on demonstrated skills and experience.
