Life's all action for the littlest Irwin
5 December 2011
Sunshine Coast Daily
Robert Irwin is no ordinary eight-year-old. Instead of waking up on his birthday and hunting down the most popular computer game or the latest Nerf gun, he was hoping for something more out there - like a mountain bike. Kathy Sundstrom talked to Robert and the littlest Irwin was only too keen to share his views.
What kind of cool eight-year-old stuff do you like?"I’m interested in all things reptile and dinosaurs, one of my favourite dinosaurs is an Austrolovenator [spelt himself], it is Australia’s version of the T-Rex it could run up to 17km/h and it is one of the fastest and agile dinosaurs for its size."
Who is your superhero and why? That’s easy, it is definitely my dad. He was not only the strongest and amazing superhero but he was a great conservationist. I hope to grow up just like him."
What is your favourite food?"My favourite food is barbecue food, especially steak and sausages. I like my steak medium-rare and I’m a no sauce kind of bloke."
Do you like playing computer games like DSi or is your real life too cool to bother with virtual reality? "At the moment I am enjoying an iPad game about wildlife and dinosaurs. I only play it though when I am travelling. It is about building sustainable eco-systems around the animals. When I am not travelling I have the luckiest life visiting all the animals in the zoo."
What is your favourite animal? "One of my favourite sections [of the zoo] to visit is Africa and our baby rhino Savannah. My favourite animal in the zoo is our baby rhino, Savannah. My favourite animal in the world is the chameleon because they can change colour and their eyes can move in different directions so they can see their prey or a predator."
What is your favourite television program? "I love watching my dad’s DVDs. I watch them every day".
What’s your favourite school subject? And your favourite book? "My favourite school subjects in school are maths and science. I have always enjoyed learning new things at school and every time I come back from a trip with my family I have learnt something new as well.
"My favourite book is called Raptor Red by Robert I. Baker. It is written from a dinosaur’s point of view and I have been reading lots more books because Bindi and I are in the Wildlife Warriors read-a-thon at the moment."
Do you have a set bed-time? "I always try to have an awesome day jam-packed full of fun before I have to go to bed."
What’s your favourite sport? "My favourite sport is mountain biking. It is a great way to get outside and get into nature and it is great exercise."
