This department has 7 species of native mammals and 1 exotic species, making over 100 animals in our care. It takes an average of 7 staff each day to clean, maintain and care for this sections animal enclosures as well as daily training and enrichment.
All of the staff on this team are very dedicated and hard working, with a great passion for the animals in their care-which is evident in the high standards of their work.
Claudia started working at Australia Zoo as a volunteer and later became a Native Mammals Keeper in September 2004. These days Claudia works with our beautiful Native Mammals.
Claudia loves working with Australian Native animals because of their uniqueness and they have certainly found a very special place in Claudia's heart. Claudia has completed Wildlife Biology studies & has been involved in a number of research studies, including one on Australia's Bilby. Claudia still finds time to be involved in platypus habitat research activities, when she's not busy tending to her amazing vege garden with the help of her husband. Apparently our Claudia has quite the green thumb.
Beth has been an invaluable member of our native mammals crew since 2007. We don;t know what we would do without her!!!
After 8 months volunteering, Rachael was offered a position as a Keeper in our Mammals Department in December 2014. Rachael would reccomend volunteering as "it is always full of amazing experiences".
Outside of the Zoo, Rachael enjoys hanging out at the beach with her dogs.
Calyce joined the Zoo Crew early 2013 and comes from a background of teaching music and drama. Her favourite aspect of working at Australia Zoo is the hands on experience with the animals.
Like many of our keepers Calyce does not have a favourite animal at the Zoo. She loves them all and finds it amazing how each animal has their own unique personality.
Calyce has travelled overseas following her passion for animals with her favourite experience walking Pumas in Bolivia.
Donnie joined the the Autsrlia Zoo Crew in Jan 2014. He has a background in Retail and Hospitality. Donnie has a softpot for lemurs and he cant wait to meet all our gorgeous animals.
Donnie has also had an awesome experience with a Rhino - giving it a mud bath.
Outside of the Zoo Donnie likes Basketball, Adventure exploring, AFL.
For as long as she can remember Megan has always loved animals. From growing up on a farm raising many different animals to becoming a wildlife carer and rescuer with Moreton Bay Koala Rescue, she surrounds herself with animals.
After volunteering for several years at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, in 2009 Megan was offered the position of Receptionist and she jumped at the chance to fulfil a lifelong dream.
Megan considers it a privilege to be involved in the care and rehabilitation of our wonderful native wildlife; never taking anything for granted, she treasures each interaction and experience and appreciates the dedication, passion and sharing of knowledge from everyone at the wildlife hospital.
Megan is now part of the Mammals department at Australia Zoo.
Veda started with the Birds crew in August 2014. Having already worked as a volunteer for 8 months before being offered a job as a keeper. Veda is also currently studying animal ecology at Uni. The hardest question for veda to answer is "What is your favourite animal?" as the answer is all of them , "because I love everything that flies, walks, and swims. Veda has now moved across into our Native Mammals dept and is loving every minute.
Outside of the Zoo Veda enjoys bushwalking, reading, horse riding, drawing and art.
