Many companies believe that happy staff equate to happy customers and this in turn, leads to repeat business and better profits. Our staff at Australia Zoo, are passionate and have a 'can-do attitude'. They portray our company's global goal of 'exciting conservation through education'. The Human Resources Department will serve to develop staff and management with the environment and tools to achieve this. We will be striving for fairness and consistency, whilst giving individuals opportunities to be challenged and to reach their maximum potential.
Working with the Human Resources team is always challenging but no matter what we are faced with, our teams' enthusiasm is contagious! The key to success in such a serious role is keeping it real and making it fun - which is a characteristic of this team that comes easy!
Human Resources Manager
Having previously worked in a recruitment company on the Sunshine Coast, Sandy assisted with recruitment strategies and placements for the zoo as it began to expand. Sandy said that she immediately knew that she wanted to join the 'zoo family' and took on the role of HR Manager in 2001 and hasn't left since.
As the HR Manager, Sandy has said that the 'humans' in the zoo should be her favourite animal but everytime she see's our naughty wombats she is in awe them. Sandy also regularly visits the baby animals in the kids zoo for a 'therapy break' from the office.
Sandy leads our team of amazing HR girls covering key areas such as Recruitment & Selection, Staff Training & Development, Workplace Health & Safety, Employee Relations, Timekeeping & Attendance, Performance Management, Uniforms as well as anything else to 'help make the zoo a great place to work and be involved in'.
Recruitment Manager & PA to the General Manager
Bonnie started work at Australia Zoo in 2005, working as a Retail Assistant in the Australiana Shop. Within 12 month, she transferred into the HR Department and has been working in this area ever since.
Within HR she oversees all Recruitment processes, is the 2IC of the Department, and is also the Personal Assistant to the General Manager.
Bonnie has completed a Certificate IV in Business and a Diploma of Management during her employment as Australia Zoo; and in 2010, she was awarded Staff Person of the Year.
Her favourite animal is the Echidna, they are so unique and special!
Training & Trainee Manager
Jess joined our 'zoo crew' in July 2007 originally in our Admissions team before transferring to HR in December of the same year. She began her HR career as an administrative assistant before focusing on internal training and traineeships.
Jess has always had a passion for teaching and had been in Japan the year before she joined our crew teaching english. Working and studying hard over the past few years, Jess has now completed 4 qualifications through traineeships with TAFE and is currently the Manager of Training and Traineeship at Australia Zoo since June 2011.
Jess spends her days ensuring that our staff have the very best learning and development opportunities available to them including both internal and external training. When not in her office, Jess can be found feeding her favourite animal, our gorgeous Elephants in the 11am show in the crocoseum.
Melissa joined the HR girls in January 2012. Mel is passionate about animals so when the WH&S vacancy job came up, and with her previous experince in the field, she knew she had to work here.
The message of conservation and animal protection that is portrayed by Australia Zoo is second to none and one of the many reasons Mel is proud to be a part of the 'zoo crew'.
Melissa has great variety in her job role and loves being part of the education of people in the Zoo's message. She says "the feeling that you are doing your little bit to help - it's all about satisfaction in coming to work and doing your job every day".
Of all the incredible animals here at Australia Zoo, big and small, her favourite has always been the otters. They are a very under rated animal and they are cute, cheeky, intelligent, playful and seem to do certain behaviours just for the sheer enjoyment of it. A pleasure to sit and watch for a while.
Melissa loves open spaces so when she is not at work Mel can be found in the great outdoors.
Recruitment & Administration Coordinator
Joining us is January 2013 Michelle is the most recent member too our awesome HR Team! Michelle comes from a background of administration, accounts and human resources.
Within our HR department Michelle takes care of all recruitment requirements Australia Zoo may have. She is constantly on the lookout for outstanding applications to add to the Zoo Crew family.
Michelle’s favourite aspects of working at Australia Zoo she says is... “There aren’t too many office jobs that allow you to see exotic animals on a daily basis, wear joggers and work side by side with people that all have the same passion for animals and conservation. It doesn’t get any better than this!”
The animals Michelle mostly adores here at the Zoo are the reptiles as you can see by her photo with one of gorgeous Burmese pythons.
