The Australia Zoo Rescue Unit provides a free service to the community to rescue sick and injured wildlife and get them to the best possible veterinary treatment, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. The team are highly skilled and trained to rescue everything from road accident victims to marine animal strandings (including everything in between) and they do it all seven days a week!
A variety of specialised gear is required in any given emergency and theirs includes Australia Zoo Rescue vehicles decked out with a range of rescue equipment, and access to watercraft for local marine rescues.
The team receive an average of 500 calls per month with most of those located in the Greater Sunshine Coast Region. The best part of the job is getting the call from the vet that the animal has recovered in their care and ready to be released back to the wild – that’s why we love what we do!
Toby started working at Australia Zoo in 1997, and now heads up the Australia Zoo Rescue Unit. His passion for crocodiles and all things scaly has seen him heavily involved in all manner of croc and venomous snake rescues both in Australia and internationally. Toby's venomous snake handling skills makes him a very welcome addition to the Rescue Unit, along with his ability to climb just about anything! When Toby is not rescuing animals you can find him traveling around the globe checking out the world's crocodilians and other wildlife; places like Africa, America, Vanuatu and Sumatra just to name a few.
Now here is a man that loves not only the big reptiles but also the small stuff, right down to the smallest skink. In fact, Richard even has a soft spot for frogs as well.
Every holiday revolves around a herpetology trip and despite his quiet nature, Richard is in there with the rest of us to help conserve our Australian wildlife. From jumping on Saltwater Crocodiles to rescuing joey kangaroos, Richard is in it for the wildlife.
James has grown up with an appreciation of not only our native wildlife but all animals. James' family has been associated closely with Australia Zoo as he is Steve and Terri's nephew. James started with the Rescue Unit at 18yrs old after completing his senior certificate. James has his boat licence and is a proficient swimmer and snorkeler. James loves the outdoors and enjoys learning on the job with his experienced team members. His greatest assets are his enthusiasm to learn and his love for all wildlife.
Emma struck up her passion for wildlife as a young girl, and as a teen she started volunteering at the Australian Wildlife Hospital and Australia Zoo. After many months of committing her time to volunteering, Emma joined our Native Mammals team in May 2008.
While at school she completed her Certificate 1 in vet nursing, and is also studying up to care for a diverse range of wildlife on the side. Now studying a degree in Wildlife Biology, Emma hopes to apply the knowledge she has gained in her position in the zoo.
Emma joined our Rescue team on a full time basis in June 2012 and is looking forward to making a difference for the sick and injured wildlife around the Sunshine Coast!!!
