23 May 2013
Check out Terri, Bindi and Robert's special announcement from Australia Zoo today:
"We're so excited today to announce very special news at Australia Zoo. We have a brand new baby rhino born on May 4. He weighed a whopping 70kg and is now getting close to 100kg - so we're very proud of that,' said Terri.
The Southern White Rhino calf was born to resident rhino parents, DJ and Caballe, the third rhino to be born at Australia Zoo, joining older half-siblings Mango (born February 2013) and Savannah (born April 2011).
The public will have an opportunity to see our ripper new baby boy and his half-sister, Mango, during the up-coming June school holidays (beginning on 22 June). Our African Exhibit, which is Queensland's only multi-species exhibit, will show off our new additions as they play and learn all about their new surroundings.
But wait, there's more!
Not only are we hearing the patter of tiny rhino hooves:
"We also want to announce we have a giraffe on the way. A baby giraffe will be born here at Australia Zoo before the end of the year, which is a first for Queensland", added Terri.
Did you know that giraffes have a gestation period of 14 months and give birth standing up? The impact of hitting the ground stimulates the calf to take its first breath. Crikey!
B105, a local Sunshine Coast radio station, will be running a naming competition for our new baby rhino from 10 June. Terri, Bindi and Robert will choose the winning name which will be announced on the first day of school holidays!
