Australia Zoo’s African Savannah is thrilled to announce our newest addition, a gorgeous giraffe calf named, Sunny!
He’s getting more confident on his long legs each day, with guests now able to spot him grazing with his mum, Sally. At the moment, he is never too far from mum, but will slowly start becoming an independent young giraffe. With a gestation period totalling an incredible 15 months, this long-awaited birth signifies the continuation of a successful giraffe breeding program at Australia Zoo, as only 90,000 giraffes are believed to be left in the wild. Australia Zoo’s African Savannah has seen four giraffe births in just over two years, with Sunny’s birth making it five!
GEM Energy had the honour of giving Sunny his name after winning the naming rights in the auction at the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner in Brisbane last month.
The significant donation made to name this beautiful calf will help support conservation efforts through the Wildlife Warriors projects in Kenya. In partnership with Ol Pejeta Conservancy we help protect endangered rhinos who live alongside giraffes and other African wildlife through anti-poaching initiatives.
Keep an eye out for Sunny, Sally and all of our other beautiful giraffes next time you visit us here at Australia Zoo!
