15 November 2005
Wow. Over the years, we have had some pretty huge events at Australia Zoo. Heck, sometimes it feels like every day is an event in itself! But I’ve got to say, Tuesday 15 November was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of occasion. In fact, it was more of an only-in-one-lifetime-so-far kind of occasion, so that’s a pretty big deal!
Our beloved Harriet, an absolutely gorgeous Giant Galapagos Land Tortoise AND the world’s oldest living resident (she’s even in the Guinness Book of World Records!) turned an amazing 175 years old. Can you imagine the life Harriet has led? Most people know her incredible life story (click here to read all about it), and we are so proud and privileged to have such a wonderful animal living here at Australia Zoo – not just because of her rich history, but simply because she has the most beautiful nature and charming personality, and we all love her to bits!
We celebrated Harriet’s big day in true Australia Zoo style, with heaps of our Zoo crew and thousands of guests gathering for cake, candles and singing. We partied all day, and I think if Harriet had a dollar for every time somebody wished her a heartfelt “Happy Birthday!” she could probably buy her youth back.
But I can’t imagine that she’d want to. Look at that gorgeous face – who wouldn’t love this brilliant old broad?
Happy birthday, Harriet!
