Guests and Zoo Crew alike had a fabulous time celebrating the life and legacy of the original Wildlife Warrior, Steve Irwin on the fourth annual Steve Irwin Day, held at Australia Zoo on Monday 15 November 2010.
Gates opened at 8am, letting everyone get amongst the action early. Friends of the Zoo, Madga Szubanski and Beau Bridges joined Terri, Bindi and Robert to officially launch Steve Irwin Day celebrations.
Cameras clicked away as we all eagerly watched our famous mates; Channel 9's Steve Jacobs, Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh, actor Beau Bridges, Aussie rocker Shannon Noll, actor Magda Szubanski and the Sea Shepherd's Captain Paul Watson set their handprints in concrete as part of the new Australia Zoo Walk of Fame. Robert got amongst the action too by having his hand and footprints set alongside those of his family. Be sure to check out the new Walk of Fame, located near the Aldabran Tortoise enclosure at Australia Zoo.
By jingo, that was only the beginning of the excitement! Kids got busy planting seedlings and making possum boxes, and the big kids got to meet the Crusty Demons and listen to a variety of inspirational talks including stories from Captain Paul Watson and Traditional Owner of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, David Claudie.
We all had a laugh as we headed to the Crocoseum and watched a snippet of Magda performing alongside Steve and Terri in Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, and we got a glimpse of Bindi in her feature film debut, Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove. Wow... don't miss that movie!
There were STACKS of people dressed in khaki in the spirit of KHAKIT IT, strutting their stuff on our Khaki Catwalk. Then we put on our dancing shoes as ‘Australian Idol' Shannon Noll rocked the Crocoseum.
The fun just didn't stop all day and the weather was fantastically sunny. Towards the end of the day, Terri, Bindi, Robert and Wes, along with some of the Zoo Crew, got the opportunity to cool off as they were dunked in the dunking machine, raising funds for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors.
What a great day, and what a great way to celebrate the life of The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. Here at Australia Zoo we hope you help us in continuing Steve's legacy of conservation, family and fun!
