Garmin is a company delivering innovative GPS technology across diverse markets; but did you know they are also providing groundbreaking technology assistance to Australia Zoo's supported conservation projects?
Australia Zoo has partnered with Garmin for the past 5 years to deliver crucial technology to Australia Zoo's supported conservation projects all around the world; whether it is saving tigers in Sumatra, gorillas in Central Africa, rhinos in Kenya or elephants in Cambodia, Australia Zoo is continuing to source GPS units for our supported conservation programs all around the world.
Australia Zoo has delivered over 50 Garmin GPS units to support our on-the-ground partners while they continue to do what they do best, conserve wild places and wild animals of this world.
Australia Zoo's International Conservation Manager, Giles Clark says the feedback from the field regarding the Garmin GPS units has been outstanding.
"The Garmin GPS units we operate in the field all around the world are essential to achieving conservation results and always perform to a remarkably high standard, no matter what the environmental conditions. The units are versatile and yet simple to operate in the field. These Garmin GPS units are very reliable and we can rely on them to get satellite fixes, even in thick mountainous forest cover." said Giles.
Debbie Martyr is the Program Manager for the Fauna & Flora International Tiger Protection and Conservation Unit in Sumatra and regards the Garmin GPS units as indispensable.
"The GPS units donated by Garmin through Australia Zoo are absolutely indispensable to the Kerinci Seblat Sumatran Tiger Protection & Conservation Unit when conducting ranger patrols and other field activities. We find that they demonstrate very high satellite signal sensitivity so that accurate position fixes are quickly secured even in very dense tropical forest," said Debbie.
"They are magnificent and we again thank Garmin and Australia Zoo for the wonderful support given over the years to field actions that conserve wild Sumatran tigers and forest," Debbie continued.
Even all the way over in Kenya at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, our supported conservation programs are reporting back that the GPS units supplied by Australia Zoo are making a difference.
"The Garmin GPS units are an essential bit of equipment in rhino monitoring, allowing us to build an accurate home range map for each rhino within the conservancy. This gives a clear understanding of the animal's habits and in the case of the individual going missing allows the patrol to focus all efforts in a defined area," says Batian Craig, wildlife and Security manager - Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya.
