Elephants take early morning swim to beat the heat
Though summer has officially ended, recent warm temperatures on the Sunshine Coast caused Australia Zoo's three Asian elephants to take novel measures to cool down!
During today's early morning stroll out the back of Australia Zoo, matriarch Sabu decided to treat herself to a swim in the dam, and was soon followed by Siam and Bimbo.
Australia Zoo head of elephants Luke Reavley said it was a perfect day for the elephants to choose to get in the water.
"This morning we took Sabu, Siam and Bimbo for a walk, and like every morning they got to choose whether they wanted to graze, have a swim or just be cheeky and push some trees down," Luke said.
"The girls were very excited to have a swim this morning. When they first entered the water they were spraying water everywhere and ripping up the lily pads."
Australia Zoo currently supports an international conservation program to save endangered Asian elephants in Sumatra and Cambodia, donating thousands of dollars each year and raising vital funds through elephant encounters available to zoo visitors.

Luke, you must have one of the best jobs in the world my friend. Interacting and spending quality time with those beautiful elephants (or elempees as I use to call them many, many years ago) is living the dream. Breaks my heart that Steve isn't here to enjoy all this too; think about him everyday.These girls are so spoilt - LONG MAY IT CONTINUE.
