Australia is home to countless animals that aren't seen anywhere else in the world. Our country's famous native animals include kangaroos, emus, and the iconic Tasmanian devil. But when it comes to cuddly native Australian animals, koalas, with their big, fluffy ears, are a definite favourite!
The first thing that needs to be said about koalas is that, contrary to popular belief, they're not bears. Koalas are marsupials. That means that they're mammals that carry their young in a pouch after they're born. When the koala's baby or "joey" is a bit bigger, you will see it enjoying a piggy-back ride on its mother's back.
Koalas are found in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Koalas from the south tend to be larger and darker than their counterparts further north.
Every Koala's favourite food is eucalyptus leaves (actually, it's pretty much the only thing they eat), so the main place you will find Koalas is in eucalyptus forests. These cuddly native Australian animals just love to snooze, sleeping for up to 20 hours a day. The secret to their drowsy lifestyle is their super slow metabolism and the fact that their chosen diet of eucalyptus leaves is not high in energy.
Koalas don't have the best eyesight, but their hearing and sense of smell are great. Their sense of smell helps them to choose the best eucalyptus leaves to eat, and their great hearing helps to warn them when predators are about.
