Here at Australia Zoo, we take care of one of the largest land mammals in the world... elephants! This means preparing hundreds of kilograms of food every single day to sustain these huge animals, but during these hot summer months, the eating habits of our elephants change.
Luckily for our hard-working keepers, during the warmer months our elephants don't eat quite as much as they do in winter, as they don't need to use as much energy to heat up their bodies.
During summer their food preferences also change. As you can imagine, juicy banana trees and other plant species are a lot more appetizing because of their high water content, whereas in winter, bulkier foods, like hay become the favourite treats.
We just recently weighed our three gorgeous girls; Siam, Sabu and Bimbo. All three girls have lost a little weight over the last few months, which is normal and what we would expect during the warm weather. Sabu and Siam both weighed slightly over 4000kg, while Bimbo, our vertically challenged little elephant, weighing in at around 2500kg. Crikey!
During these hotter days, the elephants often make use of their giant pool in their home at Elephantasia, so come and check them out!

A beautiful picture of one of your gorgeous girls. It must be wonderful to be caring for and making friends with these wonderful animals. Everything about them is so big, including their 'poo' (70kg per elephant, per day I think I remember reading). Oh, I'm just full of interesting facts!! Big is beautiful and Bimbo sweetie, small is beautiful too. Love to all, Gail xx
