Pegasus the Eastern Grey Kangaroo Joey - 9th November 2012

Age: Joey Sex: Male Weight: 1.43kg
Found: On the side of Old Gympie Road at Burpengary after his mum was sadly hit and killed by a car.
Transported to: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by a local vet.
Veterinary Assessment: Dr Robyn assessed little Pegasus and found he had suffered a severe laceration to his face, with x-rays confirming a small fracture on his frontal bone. There was also some minor bruising on both hocks (ankles).
Treatment: Dr Robyn administered Pegasus fluids, pain relief and antibiotics. His wounds were cleaned, and covered with bandages after sutures came loose due to dying skin.
Future: Pegasus will remain in care in our Nursery ICU until his facial trauma has healed to a stage where he is able to go to a local wildlife carer, before eventual release back to the wild when he is old enough.
AZWH Fact: Eastern grey kangaroo joeys remain in mum's pouch for 9 months, and stay close by for a further 18 months. Please take care while driving on the roads!
