Vanuatu Rescue Mission
In 2003, Steve Irwin and Australia Zoo team members Brian and Kate Coulter were asked by the Vanuatu government to assist in relocating a crocodile that they had seen cruising along their heavily populated coastline at Maewo. This crocodile posed a threat to the livestock and children on the island of Maewo, and the people had to change their lives around this crocodile – including their daily routines of fishing, swimming and diving – all crucial to their culture and existence. The villagers were afraid for their children's safety and eagerly awaited the Australia Zoo International Crocodile Rescue team. After a few attempts, the crocodile was caught and successfully relocated to its original home on the island of Vanua Lava.
While in the region doing crocodile work, Steve and Brian took time out to give educational talks to the local community of Sola. They also conducted a survey on the Alligator and Selva Rivers, including the surrounding bay areas.
