Having Fun!
20 June 2008
One of the most common questions we get asked in the bird show department from the public is “Why don’t the birds just fly away?” Some people think we use a remote control and sometimes we wish we could, because it would make our job a lot easier.
The remote control idea came from people seeing a tracking device or telemetry on the bird’s tail. We attach these to most of our newer birds when they are starting out in the free flight show just in case they get a fright and get lost in the forestry behind the Zoo. The telemetry helps us to find the bird much more efficiently.
Another good reason why the birds don’t fly away is because we all form a strong bond with them. We play and interact with them and always positively reinforce them. Making the show fun for the birds is the key to our success so they look forward to performing for the daily crowds and don’t see it as a chore, plus they love getting their cuddles when they do a great job!
We can tell if the bird is enjoying themselves and sharing the excitement of each show with them is our big reward every day!
