Steph -The Miracle Koala
11 June 2004Stephanie, or Steph as she is known to us, is our little miracle koala and very much a favourite here at Australia Zoo.
Steph is a very good example of the damage dog attacks can have on koalas. Steph was attacked six years ago and came out with a broken back and not much movement in her legs since. She went into intensive care and was very lucky to make it. Unfortunately her joey wasn't as lucky and didn't survive.
Since then, Steph has undergone a lengthy regime of physiotherapy and has had remarkable improvement in her mobility and now enjoys trips down to our Koala Walk-Through exhibit. As she has had quite a lengthy recovery and has been in extremely close contact with people, she absolutely craves attention and thoroughly enjoys the interest our guests have in her. She is also a great ambassador for suburban koalas to encourage people to tie their dogs up at night. Once you meet Steph, there is no stopping you falling in love with her.
