Dinner Time!

29 February 2008

The weather has warmed up slightly and the rain seems to have stopped, so the croc boys have decided to treat our big saltwater crocodiles in the environmental park and triple ponds to some big food items!

In the wild crocodiles catch their own food and a large male saltwater croc can take down large mammals up to the size of one tone Asian water buffalo! When a crocodile catches a large pray item they show some amazing behaviour.

At the Zoo we usually feed our crocodiles around two kilos of meat once a week during the summer months, and around one kilo of food during the colder winter months. This month we have changed the menu for Acco, Agro, Weipa and Charlie and given them a treat. As a form of enrichment for our crocodiles we have given them half a goat each which weighs around 16 kilos. The crocodiles love this and perform behaviours such as death rolls and head shakes just like they would in the wild, check out the picture of Charlie!

Until next time CROCS RULE!
