Tribute to Karma

Karma was a beautiful Common Brush-tail Possum and was famous among the Mammal and Roving Departments for her beautiful nature. Karma was probably the most affectionate, trusting and gentle animal in the Zoo - she never failed to have enough kisses for everyone.

Karma came to the Zoo through the Koala Hospital. Her mother was hit and killed by a car when Karma was very small. Karma survived, though she lost most of her eyesight and half of her tail. She came to live with us at the Zoo as she was unable to be released, but as she grew up she found a special role in helping to educate visitors about conservation. With her most gentle and loving nature she was also wonderful with small children.

As keepers caring for Karma, we had to quickly get the hang of sweeping and hosing out her enclosure with Karma sitting on one shoulder, as she often refused to sit anywhere else. And everyone knew a sure-fire cure for a bad day was to duck in for a quick cuddle and a showering of possum kisses from gorgeous Karma.

It has been a sad week as we learned that Karma passed away; she will be sorely missed, but her gentle nature, huge personality and gorgeous big ears will be remembered fondly by all of us, as we can feel happy that Karma was given a second chance to have a great life here at the Zoo with so many people that loved her.
