Animal Enrichment

6 May 2005

We as reptile keepers get up to so much on a day to day basis; often we don't even have time to scratch ourselves! There is however one thing we do work into our busy schedule each day, and that is animal enrichment. Animal enrichment is more or less increasing an animals quality of life. To give you a good example of this, I have included a photo of Basil. Basil is a 12 foot Burmese Python weighing up to 60 kg. I've taken her out of her enclosure and placed her out on the grass to give her a chance to stretch her 'legs' and get the best part of an hours sunbake. This also gives her the opportunity to do some exploring, triggering behaviours observed out in the wild. As you can see I have this extremely complex operation all under control.
