Farewell for Katie

27 October 2006

It has been a very sad week for the Mammals department, as we say goodbye to one of our most passionate animal keepers... our dear old Katie.

Otherwise known as grandma, Katie started working at Australia Zoo in late 2004. Her love grew widely through all the animals in the department. Many of her furry and spiky friends will miss her greatly. Especially one of our devils, Tahune. Tahune is one of our shyest little boys, and it takes him a long time to develop a relationship with his keepers. But when Katie was about, he could be himself. Often you would find Katie sneaking off to go play with him.

Another animal that will miss her is big boy Chisel. Chisel is our male Common Wombat, who also finds it hard to establish relationships with people. But Katie’s calm nature allowed him to feel comfortable and safe in her presence. He will miss their romantic afternoon walks.

All the animals, however, will feel a deep loss. From her special monotreme friends to her loveable otters, all the animals will miss Katie, and I know she will miss them as well.

Katie’s endeavors take her far, and I’m sure this isn’t the last you will hear from her. If anyone knows our girl, she does appear to be reserved and quiet. But deep down this girl has a heart of gold, and a passion that will extend to the world. Nothing is going to stand in her way, she will continue to fight for conservation and she’s not afraid to say it either.

So from all the mammals team, thank you. We are going to miss you immensely.
