Happy Birthday Rhino!

26 May 2006

This week we celebrated a very special birthday for ‘Rhino’, our 28-year-old Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta). Rhino has been an Australia Zoo resident since the early nineties and is a very much loved and respected "elder" of the Zoo. Rhino tends to scare people with his tough exterior, but to those who know him he is really just a big softie!

Rhinoceros Iguanas are native to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and several surrounding West Indian Islands. Mature Iguanas are primarily herbivores, eating fruit, leaves and flowers. Sadly, Rhinoceros Iguanas are an endangered due to introduced species and habitat destruction. We are truly honoured to have Rhino here and look forward to spending many more years with him!
