Pigs in a box

23 March 2007

Pigs in a box? Now that sounds unusual, but enrichment for our animals is a necessary part of their day and one of the many fun things we do for our cute little pigs, is to put some snacks into a box and let them forage through it.
As soon as they see the box, out of curiosity, they can't wait to run over to check it out and of course, with the usual scramble, it's first in best serve.
With 6 little piglets all trying to push their way in to see what's inside, it doesn't take long before the contents begin spilling out and even the shyest and quietest of the bunch get a taste of those goodies.
So what are these tasty snacks? (tasty for little pigs anyway) Well, we use a variety of foods including grass, lucerne, hay and a mixture of stock feed, seeds and some chopped up veges and fruit. They love corn, carrot, zucchini, beans, sweet potato and tomato just to name a few, and fruits such as apple and kiwi fruit which are high on the list. Wow, what fun they have pushing and shoving, but all 6 pigs do not fit in the box, so it isn't long before the box bursts open to fully reveal all its contents which are now consumed with delight.
