Check out this update on our newest "little" rhino baby, Winston, the first male rhino born at Australia Zoo, now almost three months old and weighing in at over 200 kilograms (440 pounds, roughly the weight of two and a half men)!
Although the other recent additions to our growing rhino family, Savannah and Mango (both female), can be boisterous and playful, their personalities are so different to Winston's. Whilst the girls are calm, sweet and love hanging out for pats, Winston (although he can be very sweet too) is so full of mischief and is into EVERYTHING; its hard for his poor mum Caballe to keep up! We think of him as our little bull terrier as even his face is so different to the delicate females. However, even though he can be a little terror at times, he is completely loveable and adorable and no matter who is watching him, he will always bring a smile to your face.
Winston has started spending time on display exploring Australia Zoo's African Exhibit, accompanied by his mum, and although his confidence is building day by day, he can still get a little anxious if out there for too long. We're happy to let him stay out for as long as he's relaxed before returning to the ‘nursery' area for a snack and a nap after all that tearing around!
Very soon we will put Caballe and Winston back in with Aunty Inyeti and half sisters Savannah and Mango, where they can run as one herd, which should make all of the females feel more secure and confident.
We can't wait to see Winston racing around and playing with his sisters - and of course all the mischief he will make! In the meantime, one of Winston's favourite games is to chase the ducks that also call Africa home! He'll kind of creep up on them (as much as a little boy rhino can creep...) before having a little charge at them. So easy to be a brave boy when you've got mum behind you to back you up and get you out of trouble!
Keep your eye out for Winston with his mum and sisters next time you're visiting Australia Zoo, or stay tuned to our social media for photo and video updates; we can guarantee that you'll fall in love with him too.
