ANIMAL FACTS - Goats
There are over three hundred distinct breeds of goat.
Female goats are called does or nannies.
Have you ever noticed that goats have horizontal rectangle-shaped pupils? This unique adaptation increases their peripheral depth perception. How cool is that!
(Capra aegagrus hircus)
Goats are one of the oldest domesticated species. A very intelligent and inquisitive animal; they love to explore new environments and are brilliant at escaping their old ones! Don’t let their appearance fool you; goats are very coordinated and have remarkable balance and climbing skills. It is common for goats to climb over fences and up trees with ease.
With their prehensile upper-lip and tongue, goats love to investigate all kinds of potential food items. Although they have a reputation for eating just about anything; goats are quite particular eaters. Preferring a diet of browse, goats enjoy palm fronds, acacia leaves, macadamia leaves and pine – just to name a few.
Dixie is a Miniature Pixie Goat and has won many hearts in the Zoo Crew, volunteers and guests.
Dixie has a gorgeous personality; she is soft and affectionate yet she can also show a mature and dominant side when with her pen mates. She is also the proud mum of twins!
Dixie loves to get brushed and will often come over so guests can scratch her on the head or legs, but be careful if you bend down to give her a pat, you may get the odd kiss on the cheek or even a nibble on their ear!
