Australia Zoo has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced elephant husbandry person to join the team. To be a part of the team you will need to have a positive, open-minded, ‘can-do' attitude with very strong communication and teamwork skills.

About the Role:
This position provides the opportunity to work with our beautiful elephants as we continue to develop Australia Zoo's Sumatran elephant programme. Additionally you will work with us to continue advancing ‘Africa' Department husbandry programmes with our collection of large hoof-stock, carnivores and small primates.


As an experienced keeper you will share responsibility for all aspects of animal care, including maintaining health parameters for the elephants, daily cleaning and feeding regimes, upkeep of animal records and maintenance of hygiene; animal training; working to strict safety protocols and standard operation procedures. With a mission to exceed guest expectations and work towards the future, you'll help to create magical moments for our guests to treasure by delivering great customer service and Zoo guest experiences.

 

At Australia Zoo, keepers continually work towards providing excellent facilities and care for their animals. They do this with enthusiasm and motivation toward their individual learning and training.
Please note that this department is strictly a non-smoking environment and this must be taken into consideration when applying for this position.


Tasks and competencies may also include:

  • Husbandry aspects including: training, feeding, grooming and caring for elephants
  • Understanding and demonstrating the ability to apply sound classical and operant, conditioning methodology to all behavioural situations
  • Good understanding of community values and what is appropriate behaviour to be trained for captive collections
  • Training and conditioning elephants for health checks and changes in their environment
  • Maintaining hygiene standards including: dust bathing, daily skin care, wash downs and foot-care 
  • General husbandry skills including animal observation and thorough animal facility cleaning and maintenance 
  • Excellent general husbandry skills pertaining to the nutritional requirements of elephants 
  • Understanding of animal records systems including the use of ZIMS and maintaining health records
  • Demonstrated ability to address or treat minor medical enquiries, report conditions to relevant supervisor in a timely manner, and coordinating any follow up check-ups with veterinarians
  • Exercising and enrichment of elephants
  • Customer service including partaking in interactive animal programmes, answering guest questions and conducting public talks
  • Assisting with elephant transfers between enclosures, back of house areas and on display areas
  • An understanding and demonstrated ability in all aspects of elephant veterinary husbandry including the appropriate use of insecticidal repellents

 

This role is:

  • Projected to be an ongoing long-term role dependant on working rights within Australia
  • Full-time position encompassing 40 hours per week
  • Subject to a 6 month probation period

 

Remuneration: AU$56,000 - AU$67,000 gross per annum


Essential Criteria:

  • Extensive demonstrated experience working ‘hands-on' with elephants
  • Good understanding of principles of health and safety working in and around elephants
  • Sound knowledge in animal behavioural training methodologies and demonstrated ability to apply them with elephants in a free contact situation
  • Good overall knowledge of elephant natural history and husbandry management
  • High level of physical fitness as this is a very physical role
  • Flexible availability and willing to work weekends and public holidays
  • Committed and passionate about a long-term career with elephants and large animals

 

Desired Criteria:

  • Experience driving tractors and/or trailers
  • Comfortable and confident in the use of simple light machinery
  • Experience in animal enclosure design
  • Experience in the use of ZIMS animal record keeping programme
  • Knowledge of plant identification
  • Manual driver's licence
  • Confident in driving vehicles off-road
