With over 500 acres of land and buildings, our dedicated Building Services department at Australia Zoo is primarily responsible for the maintenance of municipal residences and buildings, along with the construction of new enclosures, displays and structures. Labourers at Australia Zoo report directly to the Chief Construction and Horticulture Officer and work alongside an experienced construction crew.

A successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to work in a high performance environment, with a capacity to deliver all requirements of the role, great work ethic and the ability to work to a high standard within a team. This role is fast paced, and will require someone with a great deal of initiative.

Primary Duties –

  • Assist with the general maintenance and building of the facilities, fences and signage in and around the Zoo
  • General cleaning duties of work sites, work sheds and equipment
  • Assist tradespersons as required
  • Work within the guidelines of health and safety to ensure security and safety of self, staff, visitors and animals
  • Maintenance of fences
  • Construction of fences, including digging of holes, running of cables and digging of trenches
  • Operation of plant machinery
  • Working out the quantity of materials needed for the job by taking surface measurements or by looking at job specifications/drawings
  • Removing of old paint or paper using sanders, scrapers, blowtorches, liquid paint removers and steam strippers as appropriate
  • Preparing surfaces by fixing woodwork, filling or sealing holes, cracks and joins and washing them down to remove grease
  • Assist general building and maintenance tasks
  • Operation of basic hand tools
  • Other duties as requested

Essential Criteria –

  • Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • This is a labour intensive position which requires a suitable level of fitness
  • Must hold a current construction “White Card”
  • Ability to work well as a team and unsupervised
  • Previous maintenance/ labouring experience
  • Experience operating tools and equipment related to position
  • Hold current Driver’s Licence (manual)
  • Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday times
  • Strong attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Well-developed organisational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • A high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to negotiate and communicate effectively with staff at all levels

Preferred Criteria –

  • COVID-19 vaccinated
  • Current 1st Aid qualifications
  • Forklift Licence
  • Working at Heights Licence
  • Any other relevant certificates/licence
