Our dedicated Leaf Cutting department at Australia Zoo is primarily responsible for the collection of leaf and browse for koalas and other species. Leaf Cutters are employed predominately to ensure that all leaf cutting and browse collection takes place in a safe and ethical way. They are required to be multi-skilled and may, in some cases have certificates or specialised backgrounds.

A successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to work in a high performance environment, with a capacity to deliver all requirements of the role, great work ethic and the ability to work to a high standard within a team


Key Responsibilities –

  • Browse and leaf collection as required
  • Mowing and Whipper-snipper use on browse collection sites
  • Operation and general maintenance of machinery associated with browse collection
  • Maintain records of observations and reports on stock levels and maintenance logs where appropriate
  • Conduct environment and enclosure safety checks where appropriate
  • Communicate with Supervisor in a professional manner, regarding any concerns each day
  • Be competent in all aspects of Zoo emergency responses
  • General Maintenance of relevant vehicles and trailers, reporting damage/maintenance requests when required
  • Provide a high standard of customer service through all interactions both within Australia Zoo and the community

Essential Criteria –

  • Full availability, including the ability to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Suitable level of fitness and wellbeing to safely perform the duties
  • Ability to work well as a team and unsupervised
  • Previous grounds/maintenance experience
  • Experience operating machinery, such as 4WD’s and other vehicles
  • Hold current Manual Driver’s Licence
  • Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
  • Proof of Coronavirus vaccination (unless otherwise exempt)

Preferred Criteria

  • Current 1st Aid qualifications
  • Any other relevant certificates/licences
