
Leaf Cutter – Full Time
Australia Zoo has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced Leaf Cutter/General Keeper to join our team! This position provides a unique opportunity, for someone dedicated to conservation to work within the Leaf Cutting team, and assist with General Keeping when required!

Our dedicated Leaf Cutting department at Australia Zoo is primarily responsible for the collection of leaf and browse for koalas, Giraffes, Elephants and much more! Leaf Cutters are employed predominately to ensure that all leaf cutting and browse collection takes place in a safe and ethical way. They are required to be multi-skilled and may, in some cases have certificates or have specialised backgrounds. This unique role offers the successful candidate the opportunity to learn about General Keeping and assist the team when required.

Key Responsibilities –
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Browse and Leaf collection.
- Mowing and Whipper-snipper use.
- Operation and general maintenance of machinery associated with browse collection.
- Maintain records of observations and reports on stock levels and maintenance logs.
- Conduct environment and enclosure safety checks where appropriate.
- Communicate with Supervisor regarding ideas to apply to section, and problems occurring within the section.
- Maintain correct cleaning procedures for all enclosures/areas assigned.
- Clean, feed and maintain insects and associated rooms as necessary.
- Maintain Keeper office and fruit room and other buildings and surrounding grounds (including routine gutter cleans).
- Assist General Keepers in delivering browse and leaf to the appropriate areas throughout the Zoo.
- Assist General Keepers with general Husbandry within enclosures when required.
- Maintain relevant vehicles and trailers.
- Provide a high standard of customer service.
Essential Criteria –
This position requires:
- Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- Satisfactory & suitable level of fitness & wellbeing to safely perform the duties
- Ability to work well as a team and unsupervised
- Hold current Manual Driver’s Licence
- Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
Preferred Criteria
- Current First Aid/CPR qualifications
- Any other relevant certificates/licenses
- Chainsaw Ticket
- Experience operating machinery, such as 4WD’s and other vehicles
- Proof of Q-fever vaccination (unless otherwise exempt)
