With over 500 acres of land and buildings, our dedicated Building Services department and Australia Zoo is primarily responsible for the maintenance of municipal residences and buildings, along with the construction of new enclosures, displays and structures. Welders at Australia Zoo report directly to the Building Services Manager and work alongside an experienced construction crew.

A successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to work in a high performance environment, with a capacity to deliver all requirements of the role, great work ethic and the ability to work to a high standard within a team.

Primary Duties –

  • Assist with the general maintenance of the facilities, fences and signage in and around the Zoo (repairs, construction, painting, cleaning etc)
  • Read plans and specifications to determine the materials required, dimensions and installation processes
  • Install metal and welded materials into buildings/constructions
  • Cut materials with hand and power tools, and assemble or nail, cut and shape parts
  • Maintain tools and equipment
  • Assist to monitor and direct safety checks (staff, facilities and equipment)
  • Assist general building and maintenance tasks
  • Direct and assist general clean-up tasks
  • Assisting other tradespersons (mainly concreting, plumbing, painting) when necessary
  • Operating basic tools and machinery
  • General welding, maintenance and construction
  • Working out the quantity of materials needed for the job
  • Assist to monitor and direct safety checks (staff, facilities and equipment)

Essential Criteria –

  • Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • This is a labour intensive position which requires a suitable level of fitness
  • Must hold a current construction “White Card”
  • Ability to work well as a team and unsupervised
  • Previous maintenance/ labouring experience
  • Experience operating tools and equipment related to position
  • Experience operating associated welding equipment
  • Hold current Driver’s Licence (manual)
  • Strong attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Well-developed organisational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • A high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to negotiate and communicate effectively with staff at all levels
  • Proof of Coronavirus Vaccination (unless otherwise exempt)

Preferred Criteria –

  • Current 1st Aid qualifications
  • Skills in other building materials such as fibreglass, concrete and wood would be an advantage
