There are 40 plus Koalas to care for in this section. As well as cutting leaf, cleaning and maintenance this team is responsible for Koala photos, animal and keeper handling, training and education in our amazing walk through koala exhibit.
We have some of the world's best horticulturists working right here at Australia Zoo, providing our healthy Koalas with their nutritious diet. Our leafcutters are very dedicated to cutting only the very best eucalyptus leaf tip to feed our koalas.
Kirsten joined our busy Native Mammals crew in July 2012 following 6 years experince at Cairns Tropical Zoo with Native & Exotic Mammals. Before moving into the captive animal industry, Kirsten had spent 12 years in the Royal Australian Navy.
Kirsten joined the Koalas crew full time in December 2012 and loves getting hands on with our furry friends.
Kirsten is looking forward to working with the many different species that call Australia Zoo home. Although she has no favourites yet, some highlights of Kirsten day job include getting hands on with our naughty wombats and cuddling our cute koalas.
Matt became a leafcutter in our legendary koala crew in October 2011.
Brooke joined the Australia Zoo family early 2013, she previously volunteered for the Zoo and was doing such a wonderful job we hired her.
Brooke's love of animals has fuelled her interest in animal conservation and working at Australia Zoo allows her to combine both of those interests.
Heath joined the Khaki Crew in May 2013, he comes from a 15 year corporate background of Banking and Finance and craved a career change. A change he did get, his new position involves no office, no suit, no mobile phone, no computers. What it does involve is a lot of outdoor work and the joy of taking care of Australia's cutest and most cuddly animals.
Although Heath loves his job in the Koalas department his true passion lies with the Crocs and Snakes. He said "Growing up in North Queensland you learn quite quickly to appreciate these magnificent creatures"
Heath's most amazing animal experience was when he travelled to Kenya and visited the Elephant Orphanage and adopted a baby elephant for his daughter. He said "It is very rewarding to know how big of a difference such a little amount of money can make for an amazing creature"
Liam joined the Koala crew in November 2014. Having a background as a holticulturalist, Liam will love working side by side with our Koalas.
Amelia joined the Zoo Crew in Jan 2015, as part of our Koala crew.
Having previously worked in Costa Rica with the Leatherback turtles, and Stingrays in the Cayman Islands, Amelia is now enjoying her "cuddle" time with our beautiful Koalas.
Adele started with the Zoo Crew in February 2015. Adele was previously volunteering with the Australia Zoo crew. Having a passion for animals, Adele is keen to educate our guests on conservation.
Outside of the Zoo Adele enjoys going to the Beach and going for walks.
Patty joined the Koala Crew in March 2015. Patty has previously worked as a Vet Nurse and in animal behaviour with the RSPCA. Patty has also previously being a volunteer with Australia Zoo. Patty's highlight has been meeting Sheeba the Cheetah and Fat Boy the Komodo Dragon.
Patty also loves sport and has played Waterpolo for the last 10 years, including representing Australia at the 2008 Olympics.
Outside of the Zoo, Patty enjoys the beach and being outdoors.
Tosh started volunteering with the Zoo and was then offered a position within our Koala department in April 2015. Going from a trade as a Butcher to a keeper was a dream come true for Tosh. Tosh's favourite animal is the Crocodile
Tosh enjoys playing cricket and going bush in his spare time.
Rachel joined the Koala Crew in March 2015. " I love being able to work so close with animals and be part of such a great program."
In her spare time Rachel is playing sports/Coaching and Horse Riding.
Gene started with the Koala Crew in March 2015. Having a background in vegitation management, Gene will ensure our Koalas have the best leaf to eat!!
One awesome experience Gene has had is skydiving and parachuting next to wild Hawks.
Christian started with the Koala crew in March 2015. Having spent the past 21yrs in the metal industry, Christian followed his dream. "Joining the AZ family is a dream come true. Ever since I first visited London Zoo as a 5yr old, I told my Nanny Joan I wanted to be a Zoo keeper and look after Elephants. It's such a beautiful place to spend your day and work alongside some of the best conservationists in the world, and to keep Steve's dream alive."
Outside of the Zoo Christian enjoys going for drives with his wife and kids, surfing, kayaking, and catching bugs and crawlies with his kids.
Cameron started with the Koala Crew in March 2015. Most days, Cameron is out collecting the best possible leaf for our koalas, and loving being a part of conservation within Australia Zoo. Cameron just loves our Komodo Dragon Fat Boy, and is keen to let our patrons know all about our Koalas as well.
When not at the Zoo, Cameron enjoys camping, and bushwalking.
Catherine joined the Zoo Crew in October 2014. She has also completed an intership as a marine trainer in Long Beach California, and worked as a wildlife Keeper at Paradise Country.
One of Catherine's favourite animals is the Red Panda, with the Tigers as a close second.
One animal encouter Catherine won't forget is having a Humpback Whale appear right beside her, blowing air and covering her in Whale Booger!!
Brad started with the Zoo Crew in November 2013. Brad was a volunteer with the Zoo and really enjoyed having a cuddle with our beautiful Elephants, which he will never forget. Brad also has a soft spot for the Koalas. Brad said, “I love the whole culture at the Zoo that the Irwin’s started 40 years ago and hence wanting to join the fantastic team we have.”
Mick joined the Zoo Crew in July 2014 after being a volunteer for almost 1 year. Mick has loved animals ever since his first word, which was "nakes", and his family has always cared for wildlife. Mick has also being a volunteer at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, as part of the wildlife rescue and carer program.
Mick's best wildlife experiences has been raising and releasing "Gordy", a bennetts Wallaby, and being on safari in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Outside of the Zoo Mick enjoys surfing, scuba diving, 4wdriving, hiking and camping.
Luke joined our volunteer programme in May 2014, and then joined our awesome Koala crew in August 2014. Luke is thrilled to be able to come to Australia Zoo to work and learn something new everyday about animals and how to care for them.
Luke has had an amazing experience when he met our Wedge Tail Eagle Amelio.
Outside of work Luke enjoys surfing, photography, scuba diving & music production.
