Have you ever wondered why giraffes have such long blue tongues? Or how tall they stand? You can learn all these answers and more in our brand-new interactive giraffe encounter with our charming giraffe Forrest!
Meet the handsome Forrest and his three lovely girlfriends, Rosie, Sally and Penny, from our new platform where you can stand eye-level with the giraffes and take part in their feeding time.
From this spot you can also get a great view of beautiful Skye, Forrest's first-born baby. Skye was born to doting mother Rosie in October 2013, but also enjoys the extra attention from her "second" and "third" mothers Sally and Penny, both also due to give birth later this year.
Sally in particular is getting in lots of practice for when her calf is born in July - and with a gestation period of 13-15 months, she is more than ready! Our keepers often catch the shy Sally helping Rosie out with Skye, and even letting little Skye feel her tummy.
In the encounter you can feed Forrest his favourite foods of acacia leaves and carrot sticks, and have your picture snapped in the process. Just remember to grab on tightly to those branches - those tough prehensile lips and 50cm tongue are rather strong!
Although Forrest is full of strength and sure loves his food, he has sweetened up a lot after the birth of his first calf. While Forrest wasn't used to sharing his meals with little Skye initially, he has learnt to put her first and is proving to be a great dad. Let's hope he is prepared to share with two more calves when they are born later this year!
For just $30 you can take your Australia Zoo visit to new heights with our beautiful giraffe family.
