Australia Zoo's very own wildlife warrior, Bindi Irwin, celebrated her 15th birthday with a Return to Nim's Island-themed birthday bash! The Zoo was transformed into a beach adventure playground, filled with entertaining activities including hula-dancing workshops, a mechanical surfboard and laser tag.
"It's really nice to be sharing my birthday with everyone who comes to the Zoo today and i feel like it's a true milestone in my life," Bindi said. "Another year, more conservation issues that i'd like to tackle and hopefully empower more people to make a difference, so i'm excited! I think this year's going to be a big one."
Birthday girl Bindi was excited to be turning 15 after what can only be described as an epic year! Highlights from Bindi's 14th year included her first in-cinema movie, Return to Nim's Island, a leading role in Network Ten's Steve Irwin's Wildlife Warriors - which earned her a logie nomination; and guest appearances on popular American network shows My Babysitter's a Vampire and Curious George. Away from the silver screen, the Singapore National Parks Board named an orchid 'The Dendrobium Bindi Irwin', and Bindi also became state patron for the Shri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run.
Tackling global issues and carrying on her father Steve's conservation legacy also remain top priorities for Bindi. Earlier this year, she attracted global media coverage for her edited population essay written for Hillary Clinton, former US Secretary of State. She has also spoken out against wildlife consumption and commenced a school based traineeship with Australia Zoo, undertaking a Certificate 3 in Business.
With one eye on the future, Bindi said "I'd love to continue on with my filming work because it's a platform. I'm able to bring my message of wildlife and conservation to an even greater audience through the medium of television and so i'd love to continue down that track. And also work here at the Zoo! This is my home, this is where i've always lived and this is where my heart truly lies."
Happy 15th Birthday, Bindi!
