11 March 2014
Top o' the Mornin' to Ya! St. Patrick's Day is almost here, and Australia Zoo is celebrating all things Irish with loads of wildlife. Join us on March 17 when everything goes GREEN including heaps of zoo animals like our crocodilians, and gorgeous green iguana Jub Jub.
Guests will be encouraged to "talk like the Irish" by completing 10 classic Irish quotes hidden around the Zoo - going into the draw to win a ripper prize pack. You can also visit our awesome GO GREEN exhibition to learn how to help save the environment through conservation, as well as find information on volunteering at Australia Zoo, Wildlife Warriors, and all about our school education programs.
There will be prizes galore include the chance to win a year's supply of Peter's ice-cream for you and your family, plus free face-painting, kids games, and enjoy an array of animals including Jade the green python. And if you've got "the luck of the Irish" you may even find one of our hidden lucky coins around the Zoo and win a yummy green ice-cream from BW's ice creamery!
Staying with the green theme, Australia Zoo is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through a number of initiatives, including the building materials of our very own Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. So not only is this the busiest facility of its kind - it is also the greenest!
The hospital is an eco-friendly construction made from straw bale external walls, recycled water, and rammed earth internal walls. The floor is made from recycled materials, and the structure uses passes solar design principles to minimise energy consumption.
Within the zoo, we also minimise energy consumption with the use of power saving lights, as well as getting back to nature with natural lighting and air-flow. We also have a number of recycling initiatives, use biodegradable cleaning products and coffee cups, and have proudly developed the Answer the Call mobile phone recycling program that saves gorillas in central Africa.
If you'd like to get involved in working towards a greener world, head to our Wildlife Warriors page and find out how to be a more conscious consumer: http://www.wildlifewarriors.org.au/conscious_consumer/index.html
And we hope you'll be able to join us at Australia Zoo this March 17 to do an Irish jig and celebrate St. Patrick's Day! For more information and to buy tickets, go to: https://www.australiazoo.com.au/visit-us/calendar/281-st.-patricks-day
